What Does BMI mean?
The body mass index (BMI) is a number calculated using body weight including both muscle and fat. As a result, some people may have a high BMI but low body fat. Some people with a BMI in the overweight range may not have extra body fat. Generally, the higher the number means the greater the amount of body fat a person has. Check your BMI using our Body Mass Index calculator on this page to see if you are at a healthy weight.
Formula
A Body Mass Index calculator works by multiplying your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared and is computed in the same way for both adult men and women.
BMI= Weight/Height2
What is a Normal Person’s BMI?
A high or low BMI might indicate a bad diet, insufficient physical exercise, or a high degree of stress. A ‘normal BMI’ does not imply that someone is in good health. The ideal BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9.
Although your BMI alone cannot forecast your health risk, most experts agree that a BMI of 30 or more (obesity) is harmful. Exercise can help you lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes no matter what your BMI is. Medical experts use the body mass index (BMI) to evaluate whether or not you are at a healthy weight.
Body Mass Index ranges
Your BMI falls into one of five categories:
Underweight: BMI of less than 18.5.
Healthy range: 18.5 to 24.9. Not a candidate for the weight-loss operation.

Obesity: Between 30 and 34.9. You could be a candidate for weight-loss surgery. The gastric band is suggested.
Severe obesity: Between 35 and 39.9. A gastric band or gastric sleeve surgery may be an option for you.
Morbid obesity: Between 40 and 49.9. You almost qualify for obesity surgery. your surgeon may prescribe a band, sleeve, or gastric bypass.
Super Obese: more than 50. The doctor will recommend you to have a gastric balloon to reduce weight as a precaution before undergoing a surgical treatment such as a gastric band or bypass.
You can use the BMI Chart to see the weight ranges for an underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity based on your height.
What is a Healthy BMI by Age?
Having a high BMI, regardless of age, carries various dangers. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke are among them. In adults, BMI is not related to age and is the same for both men and women but the calculation is different in children and teenagers. At various ages, boys and girls develop at different rates and have varying levels of body fat. Doctors do not divide children into healthy weight categories because they change each month and male and female body types have different change rates.
Children and teenagers’ BMI is calculated in the same manner as adults’ BMI is calculated. The BMI figure and the person’s age are then entered into a sex-specific BMI-for-age chart. This will tell whether or not the child is within a healthy range.
A low BMI, on the other hand, is dangerous, especially in elderly persons. As a result, several experts, believe that keeping a BMI between 25 and 27 is a good notion for older persons. Adults over 65 who are underweight have more health problems and have a shorter lifespan.
