When the patient arrives at the hospital with symptoms of appendicitis, the doctor performs a primary physical examination by palpation, during which he asks the patient to show the location of the pain. If the painful area is the right lower abdomen, the doctor puts pressure on that area with his hand and pulls it back. If the patient has severe pain during this procedure, it means that appendicitis is largely talked about. As a result, the doctor may order one or more tests to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other potential diseases. If the tests are positive, the patient is immediately taken for appendix removal surgery. In this article, we will talk about what to keep in mind after appendicitis surgery.

Appendix Removal Surgery

The treatment of appendicitis is usually performed by surgical removal of the inflamed caecum. If the operation is performed by the open method, incisions of 5 to 10 centimetres are made.  If the appendix removal operation will be performed by laparoscopic method, ie a closed method, the operation is performed using much smaller incisions. In both methods, surgeons remove the inflamed appendix. In closed surgery, a chamber is inserted into the abdominal cavity through small incisions. With this method, the inflamed organ is removed. Recovery time is much less if appendicitis surgery is performed with a closed method. Open surgeries are among the causes of pain after appendicitis surgery.

Symptoms of ruptured appendicitis

Pain is the first among the symptoms of appendicitis. Other symptoms are:

  • Pain in the lower right abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Swelling

Surgery for ruptured appendicitis

Although the laparoscopic (closed) method is generally preferred, open surgery is performed after the appendix ruptures. This is because the bacteria spread into the abdominal cavity after the rupture. When the surgeon is faced with such a situation, he must clean the abdominal cavity by performing open surgery.

Appendectomy

Appendix removal surgery is used in medical language as an appendectomy. So, how many hours does appendicitis surgery take? Appendectomy is a very easy operation and takes approximately 40 minutes. Patients may experience mild pain after the surgery. The time required for the patient to stand up varies depending on the method of operation – open or closed. Recovery after surgery is short, as long as you pay attention to the diet and the recommendations of your doctor.
