Neurosurgery

Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi (Nöroşirürji)

The neurosurgery department of Avicenna Hospitals carries out the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical assistance processes of diseases arising from or damaging the brain and spinal cord tissue, such as vascular occlusions, brain, and spinal cord traumas, and peripheral nervous system, and illnesses like waist and neck herniation. Neurosurgery treatment provides to both adult and pediatric patients.

Neurosurgeon

Neurosurgeons treat neurological problems both surgically and non-surgically. They are medical neurosurgery experts that may help patients with back and neck discomfort, and also other disorders including head trauma and Parkinson’s.

  • Treated Diseases by neurosurgery
  • Spine and Spinal Cord Surgery
  • Herniated discs
  • Cervical disc hernia

Back hernia; Waist-neck and back hernias are characterized by pain caused by tears resulting from strains in the cartilage structure, which serve as cushions between the vertebrae to assist in carrying the load, rendering them susceptible to tears. At least 15% require neurosurgery intervention.

Narrowing of the Canal in the Neck

Narrowing of the canal in the waist; A condition characterized by the pinching of the spinal cord that is located in the canal, and of the nerves detaching from the spinal cord, as a result of a narrowing in the canal in the neck/waist. It is treatable only by neurosurgery intervention, which widens the canal to relieve the spinal cord and the pinched nerves.

Slipped vertebra (spondylolisthesis) The slipping of a vertebra over another as a result of damage in the locking mechanism connecting the vertebrae to each other. Surgical intervention is performed in cases that cause pain to the extent of disrupting the patient’s quality of life and causing damage to the adjacent spinal cord/nerves. Spinal cord tumors are rare. They are rarer in childhood. They may be benign or malign Spinal fractures in addition to those that occur due to accidents are often seen in older age groups due to an impairment in bone quality due to aging.

Brain surgery

Brain tumors can be seen in every age group. They may be benign or malign. Those that are benign may be observed if small in size. Surgical intervention is the only treatment against those that reach a certain size and exert pressure on the brain tissue, or those that are malign.

Brain hemorrhages usually occur due to high blood pressure/trauma. They are pathologies posing a serious threat to life. Surgical intervention is preferred except for deeper ones and those smaller than 3 cm in diameter.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus It is a condition in which the cerebrospinal fluid, which is regularly produced in the brain to discharge the waste of the brain, fails to flow out due to a narrowing/blockage of its paths due to advancing age, is imprisoned in the cranium, and exerts pressure on the brain tissue.

Chiari malformation It is a congenital disorder in which the cerebellum is located below its normal position and exerts pressure on the spinal cord within the spinal canal, which has a diameter that allows only the spinal cord. The doctor recommends neurosurgery if the part reaching the canal is 5 mm or larger.

Nerve Surgery

Nerve compressions rarely cause nerve compression that will require surgical intervention. The nerve tumors are very rare. These surgeries include:

  • Trauma Surgery
  • Brain hemorrhages and injuries
  • Cranial fractures
  • Spinal fractures

Spinal cord injuries surgical procedures aim at removing pressure on the brain/spinal cord tissue when needed according to the shape/size/location of the pathology. None of these interventions have the effect of reversing the damage the brain and spinal cord tissues have suffered until the neurosurgery physician sees the patient.

The objective is to prevent further damage and to allow the repair of the damage by the body.

Pediatric Neurosurgery

The neurosurgery department further treats children’s diseases of brain and nerve disorders. The following is a list of these cases, which include brain and nerve disorders experienced from birth until the age of 18:

  • Hydrocephalus
  • Alteration of the cerebrospinal fluid
  • nervous system disorders
  • Brain hemorrhages
  • Epilepsy
  • tumor in the spinal cord
  • Brain cancer
  • Vascular and spinal cord conditions
